sustainability and sustainable tourism

Responsible operations are the future – we at Suomi Camping Oy are also involved in building more sustainable tourism!

Suomi Camping Oy is committed to the principles of sustainable tourism. Sustainable tourism is tourism that takes into account current and future economic, social and environmental impacts. Sustainable tourism takes equal account of the needs of tourists, tourism enterprises, tourist destinations, the environment and the local population. We put the principles of sustainable tourism into practice through Ekokompass and Visit Finland’s Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) development path.

Highlights of our sustainability commitments

Ecocompass

Ecocompass certificate to support the development of environmental work

Our environmental work has been awarded the Eco-Compass certificate in December 2022.We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations and have created an environmental programme for our company. The programme helps us to monitor the achievement of our objectives and the implementation of the planned measures. You can find out more about the Ecocompass environmental scheme here.

Sustainable Travel Finland

Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) - a sustainable tourism development path

We have completed Visit Finland's Sustainable Travel Finland sustainable tourism development path and have been awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland label. The aim of the development path is to help companies to develop their operations in a more responsible way, ecologically, economically and socio-culturally. The label does not stop us, but we will continue to develop in all areas of sustainability.

In the Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) programme, we are are committed to the principles of sustainable tourism.

Our company's environmental pledge

Our aim is to reduce our environmental impact.

The future of our customers, our staff and nature is important to us. That's why we are committed to sustainability and long-term work to reduce our environmental impact, for example by using energy more efficiently, reducing waste and raising environmental awareness among our staff and customers. Environmental work is part of our responsible business practices, including economic and social responsibility.

Responsibility in practice

Reducing electricity consumption

The accommodation business uses a lot of electricity and water. We have more than 250 cabins in all our sites in summer and 50 in winter, plus service buildings, reception areas, restaurants and other indoor facilities. The caravan sites also use electricity for motorhomes. Saving electricity is not only an environmental issue for us, but also a cost factor.
In 2024, we managed to keep electricity use at the 2023 level (in 2023 we saved 15% compared to 2022), so we can be satisfied with that.
January 2024 was challenging due to long periods of frost and high consumption. In almost all other months we managed to reduce consumption compared to 2023. In 2025, the electricity we use will be 100% CO2-free. We constantly monitor our electricity consumption and lower the temperatures if the premises are not in use. We are gradually replacing the light bulbs used for lighting with energy-saving LED bulbs.

Sustainable procurement

A lot of cleaning materials and tissue paper are used during the year. To reduce our impact on the environment, we are replacing all our cleaning products with eco-labelled products. The change will be made once the old products have been used up. The tissue papers have also been selected from an environmentally friendly range.

We also aim to reduce paper use, while reducing waste, by replacing loose paper with cloth/paper hand towel rolls.

We are setting environmental criteria for the subcontractors we use. We will score companies according to their environmental performance. In the future, we will seek to partner with companies that want to contribute to reducing their environmental impact.

We favour local products and services in our operations wherever possible. For example, we rent cash registers from a local supplier, use local printing to copy maps, buy firewood, plowing and hamburger patties from a local supplier.

Mobility and nature

We also want to promote the possibility for customers to use public transport instead of their own car to get to our areas. At our destinations we provide for more information on how best to reach us.

You can get around in nature and in the local environment with our many rental vehicles. You can rent bicycles/fatbikes, electric scooters, canoes/kayaks, rowing boats, pedal cars and sup-boats from or near the sites.

Near each site you will find nature and hiking destinations for self-drive excursions.

The Rauhalahti cleaning van runs on 100% electricity and therefore does not pollute the environment.
